People in Melbourne often say you can have four seasons in one day.

When you head out in the morning, it may be below 10°C. By midday, it can climb above 30°C. In a single day, you feel cold, then warm, putting layers on and taking them off again.

In a city like this, we have learned one thing: mornings do not need to be rushed.

A morning below 10°C

When you wake, the room is still cool. There is no need to get up just yet. Pull a cardigan close, wrap yourself in it, and lie there a little longer.

Underneath is the layer closest to your skin. It does not need to change with the weather; it only needs to rest against you without getting in the way.

Once your body has slowly warmed, put the cardigan aside and stretch on the floor. Forehead down, back opening one vertebra at a time.

Waking slowly is a way to return to your body before deciding how to step into the day.

A midday at 30°C

By midday, sunlight comes through the window and the cardigan is no longer needed.

Now only the closest layer remains, and that feels right. The weather keeps changing, but the innermost layer stays. The pieces you add or remove are the ones outside it.

Four seasons in a day, one layer underneath

In Melbourne, we do not really believe there is one right answer to what to wear today.
The weather changes. Plans change. Moods change too.

What can stay the same is the layer closest to you. With you as you wake slowly in the morning, and sit in the sunshine at midday.

Between skin and the world.
